Once you have had the AnnotationsX tool added to your Canvas site, you are now ready to create an annotation assignment for your class. A typical use for this tool is to set up an image, video, or a short body of text for your students to examine, and for them to add their own annotations. Students will also be able to see and reply to the annotations of their classmates.
Here are the steps:
1. Click on the AnnotationsX link in the left navigation bar of your Canvas site.
2. Click on the "Create New Assignment" button.
Please note that if you have an assignment that you have used on a prior course site, you are now able to import it, along with associated images (and instructor annotations if you choose). In this example, we are creating a brand new assignment.
3. Give the assignment a name by entering the name in the field labeled "Assignment Name".
4. At this point, you may either select a video that has already been uploaded to AnnotationsX or link to a new video.
Note: the terminology on this screen is confusing - we are looking at changing it.
You would choose "Add a source" if you would like to select from a list of existing text/image/video resources that have already been uploaded to the tool. Choose "create a new source" if you will be setting up a new "text/image/video" object.
In our example, you will be setting up a new video object, so please select "create a new source".
A new pop-up window will appear:
Please select "Video Annotation" from the dropdown list labeled "Annotation Type". In this example, we are using a YouTube video. Please enter the URL, as well as a title and source citation. (Note: There needs to be a Transcript Link specified. A link to a blank transcript file should pre-populate in the text box labeled "Transcript Link". You may ignore this field, unless you have a specific text transcript to associate with your video. This was built for accessibility purposes. It is a requirement for HarvardX courses, but is not at this time a requirement for residential courses.)
Hit the "Save" button on the "Edit Source Material" screen, which will close the pop-up window.
Then hit the "Save" button on the "Assignment Editor" screen.
8. To add instructions that will be displayed to the students, click on the name of the source material for which you'd like to provide instructions. The screen will then expand with an instructions box.
Fill out your instructions as illustrated below:
