This page documents the steps to run GFDL idealized AGCM on Odyssey. This include three different configurations (1) a dry core, (2) a moist AGCM with grey-radiation and (3) a moist AGCM with realistic (i.e. RRTMG) radiation. 

  1. For the dry core, first copy a test case folder into your own path from here: 

/n/holylfs/INTERNAL_REPOS/CLIMATE_MODELS/atm_dycores/exp/test_case

Among the three subfolders, the input folder contains namelists, input data files; the run folder contains the run scripts as well as post-processing scripts; the srcmods contains any possible source code modifications. 

     2.  For the moist model with grey radiation, please copy a test case folder into your own path from here: 

/n/holylfs/INTERNAL_REPOS/CLIMATE_MODELS/atm_greyscheme/test_case

Again, the three subfolder input, run, srcmods serve the same purpose as this for the dry core above. For this grey radiation model, you can set the ocean condition as a slab ocean or a fixed SST configuration. Please see the *.nml files in the input folder.

Tips

For the dry core, on Harvard cluster, often writing to disk is the rate-limiting step. You can use -N 1 to ask slurm to put all your tasks on one node, and utilize the super fast, node-local disk /scratch. See example runscript: ~pchan/script/jetshift/fms-runscript.sbatch.

One can run an ensemble, by applying slightly different initial conditions using src/atmos_spectral/init/spectral_initialize_fields.f90. See example script: ~pchan/script/jetshift/ensemble.sh.
