Introduction

ERNIE – Electronic Resource Naming InterfacE – allows librarians to add, update and delete Uniform Resource Names (URNs) in three NRS Authority paths. A URN is a way to publish a link to a resource that allows a change to be made to the URL without having to send out a new link. For example, if free resource becomes restricted, the URL for that resource will change.

NRS Authority Paths

  • hul.eresources is intended for free or licensed resources that are available to Harvard University users and will likely be listed in E-Research
  • hul.ebook is intended for single ebooks or collections of ebooks that are too small to handle through the ebook batch process
  • hul.eother is intended for Harvard library created resources, such as research guides

ERNIE also allows participating libraries to create URNS for e-bookplates that appear in HOLLIS:

  • hul.ebkplt is intended for links to e-bookplate thumbnails in DRS (participating libraries only)
  • hul.ebkpll is intended for links to either full size e-bookplate images in DRS, OR to library-maintained donor recognition pages (participating libraries only)

Create a new URN

  1. Open ERNIE in a browser: http://wally.hul.harvard.edu:8000/ernie/ernie.html
  2. Choose Status New.
  3. Choose Type.
    1. If choosing E-book, the field for E-book Collections will open below. Choose the E-book collection or choose General for E-books that are not part of a collection (e.g. single E-books). Note: If the E-book is part of a collection that does not appear in the drop-down list, please ask to have that collection added to ERNIE by submitting the License and Registration Information form located on the E- Resources Management and Licensing iSite: http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=k11228
  4. Enter a Unique ID. Try using a standard number if one is available or try to choose a meaningful one word decription.
  5. If this is a licensed resource (restricted to the Harvard community), leave the box checked for HUID/PIN required. If it is not a licensed E-book, then uncheck the box. The box remains checked by default.
  6. Enter the URL provided by the vendor.
  7. Enter your library’s email contact(s) for ERNIE in the send notification email field.
  8. Click submit
  9. A confirmation email will be sent to the email contact listed on the form. The email will include the URL submitted on the form and the requested URN. After 45 minutes, click on the URN to check the link. Note that clicking on the link to the URN before the resource has been registered will produce the following error:
  10. Finally, after testing the URN, add it to the 856 field in the holdings record in Aleph:

Please Note:      The http://nrs.harvard.edu is the required prefix to every URN. If the URN does not work and you received an email confirmation and have waited the full 45 minutes, please confirm that the vendor’s URL was entered correctly. If after verifying that the URL is correct and waiting the full 45 minutes the URN still does not work, please send a message that includes the E-book title, and Aleph system number to this email address: eresources@hulmail.harvard.edu

Update an existing URN

Updates may occasionally need to be made to URNs. Some update examples include a change in resource URL or a change in access where a restricted resource becomes freely available.

The following is an example of how to update an E-book due to a change in URL by the vendor:

  1. Locate the current URN for this resource. For example: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.ebook:MDCON_9780750675253
  2. Fill out the form on ERNIE by changing the status to Update, the Type to E-book, choose the E-book collection code, and then add the Unique ID. The Unique ID is found on the existing URN and is made up of the remaining characters that appear AFTER the underscore ( _ ) in the URN. In the above example,  9780750675253, is the Unique ID.
  3. Enter the new URL provided by the vendor in the URL field.
  4. Change the HUID/PIN required? checkbox as needed.
  5. Enter your library’s email contact(s) for ERNIE in the send notification email field.
  6. Click submit.
  7. A confirmation email will be sent to the email contact listed on the form. The email include the URL submitted and the requested URN. After 45 minutes, click on the URN to check the link.

Withdraw a URN

To withdraw a URN, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the current URN for this resource. For example: http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:hul.ebook:MDCON_9780750675253
  2. Fill out the form on ERNIE by changing the status to Withdraw and choosing the correct type. If choosing E-book, make sure to also choose the E-book collection code, and then add the Unique ID. The Unique ID is found on the existing URN and is made up of the remaining characters that appear AFTER the underscore ( _ ) in the URN. In the above example,  9780750675253, is the Unique ID.
  3. Enter the URL provided by the vendor for the E-book.
  4. No change is necessary to the HUID/PIN required? checkbox to withdraw.
  5. Enter your library’s email contact(s) for ERNIE in the send notification email field.
  6. Click submit
  7. A confirmation email will be sent to the email contact listed on the form. The email will include the URL submitted on the form and the requested URN. After 45 minutes, click on the URN to check the link.
